• Three trash providers participated and responded to the City’s Request for Proposal to earn single hauler status for trash, yard waste and recycling: Best Way, Republic, Waste Management.
• All 3 participants have single hauler contracts including several southwest Michigan municipalities. They all understand & have benefited from RFP processes.

Waste Management

• The lowest bid, won the RFP, signed the City’s contract, and purchased all new bins.

Republic

• Came in second and accepted the results of the RFP without question.

Best Way

• Was the Highest of the three bids.
• Bid double what they charge neighboring communities.
• Established “Take Back the Trash” campaign and is the sole $50,000 funder.
• Is a regional hauler, headquartered in Indiana.

• Has single hauler contracts in 4 states (MI, OH, IN, and KY).
• Has been Portage’s single hauler recycler for the last 10 years without expressing an issue.
• Launched a ballot initiative which increases the number of trucks on the road and relegates recycling to an open market.
